How do I join my local youth Club?
To find out where and when local youth centres are open check
out our website or alternatively you can just pop along to your
local centre- sessions are usually open access. You will be asked
to complete a membership form on your first visit.
How much will it cost?
All youth centres charge a small amount on entry to the club.
It ranges from 20p a night up to a £1, dependant on the activity
and facilities available to you. Other activities such as Pool might
involve an additional cost but often activities are free to members.
All youth clubs will feature a Coffee Bar facility which can serve
you food and drinks at a reasonable charge.
How old do I have to be?
All youth clubs are open to all young people aged from 11 years
old. However on some occasions club sessions will be targeted at
older (13+) young people. Check with youth workers when this applies.
Who works at my local youth club?
All Powys County Council Youth Clubs are run by fully trained
adult youth workers. Dependant on the club a minimum of two workers
would be available, often more depending on numbers of young people
attending or the location of the club. From time to time activities
may be run by visitors to the club as part of the programme and
also volunteers may be included in staff teams. On all occasions
staff and visitors will adhere to council child protection policies.
What sort of thing can I do there?
All Powys County Council Youth Centres offer a wide range of activities
for you to participate in. This may be a game of pool or darts but
could also be a craft activity, cookery project, drama sessions,
sport or discussions about issues important to you. You will also
have the opportunity to contribute to the club in making decisions
about the programme and how the club is run.
What happens in the holidays?
Sometimes it is necessary to close down clubs during school holidays
- staff need a holiday too! When this happens in all areas youth
workers will continue to offer activities, often away from the youth
centre e.g. Day trips, Residentials and projects with other providers
e.g. Leisure Centres and Outdoor activities. In all cases you will
be kept fully informed about activities available to you. We also
have a programme of activities run throughout the summer, called
summer teen schemes which is available to members of the club.
Will I be bullied if I go to a Youth
Centre
All staff are fully trained in dealing with situations that might
occur during a session. But if incidents do happen then we ask all
young people to tell someone it has happened in order for staff
to do something about it.
What do I get from being a member of the
youth club?
All new members will get membership cards and a free gift. Also
when you take part in activities you will receive appropriate certificates
that can be added to your own progress or Record of Achievement
file.
Do I have to take part in all the activities
provided?
No, you can choose what you do and when you do them. But hopefully
within the club programme there will be something for you to join
in with. Make sure that you tell the Youth Workers about the things
you enjoy doing and they will help you to do them. But if you just
want to chat with your mates or watch TV then thats fine too!
